Proyecto

This website provides harmonized historical series on resource use and environmental impacts in Spain. Environmental accounts are a recently developed set of statistics that are essential for the analysis and implementation of economic and environmental policies. They are also the basis for understanding the historical relationship between resource use, environmental impacts, and economic development. Telling the story in quantitative terms allows us to tell it in narrative terms as well.

Available environmental accounts, fully integrated into major statistical agencies, usually cover only very recent periods, largely due to their recent development. On this website, we share extended long-term environmental accounting statistics. We provide raw data, a visualization tool for key trends, and brief analyses highlighting the main insights drawn from the series that help us shape new narratives.

This project is the result of more than a decade of research developed through various projects and by an interdisciplinary team. We aim to continue expanding the series. Soon we will publish provincial data on land use and agricultural production; sectoral series on energy and industrial emissions; municipal data on land use and population by settlements in the case of Andalusia; as well as new visualizations and analyses.

The results of this website are part of the project:

  • Desarrollo económico e impactos ambientales en España (siglos XIX-XX). Instituciones, comercio y recursos naturales (DESIMPACTA) (PID2021-123220NB-I00). IPs: Juan Infante Amate e Iñaki Iriarte Goñi.

The project has been funded by the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

They have also been made possible thanks to funding from other projects that enabled the development of the series:
